Small outdoor space? Create an oasis!
Like many city dwellers, the chance to have even a small outdoor space is a great thing. In the past few months, it has been a lifesaver just to be able to sip a cup of coffee in the sun, or celebrate the end of the day with a glass of wine while watching the light fade. But with more time spent there came the realization that this small, urban outdoor space could use some attention, and since it had become my main portal to the outdoors, it was time to show it some love.
I decided to do a mini-makeover on a budget, by choosing just a few things would make the biggest difference in my small space . I hope you’ll try some of these ideas and let me know how they work for you!
A COZY THROW or outdoor pillows
Draping a colorful throw over a chair for an evening that might turn cool, or getting some outdoor pillows softens the look of outdoor furniture and brings in color and texture. I love the pom poms and the rich gold color of this one, and it’s super soft.
a great tray
I fondly recall my grandparents carrying breakfast out to the deck on a tray. A good tray lends a festive quality and creates a nice ritual out of transporting the food outside (and makes for easy cleanup after). With a bit of imagination, a meal outdoors can feel like a trip to your favorite café.
AN INDOOR-OUTDOOR RUG
Of all the things I did, this made the biggest difference in the look and feel of the deck. These rugs have come such a long way - they used to be uncomfortable underfoot, with very little to choose from. Not anymore — I’ve recommended these for clients with pets for inside the house, under dining room tables, and even in a TV room/Family room for a low-maintenance carpet. The pricing is much lower than wool area rugs, so they can be a budget-friendly option if you need a large rug or want to layer. I thought this Novogratz design was such a winner and it instantly transformed the space. Honestly, I would use this one anywhere in my house!
lanterns and candles
I had been considering string lights, but honestly there was no place to hang them with the configuration of the deck. Lanterns, hurricane lamps and candles really do nicely. If you don’t want to worry about an open flame, use a high quality battery operated candle inside. Easy peasy!
MIX FAKES WITH YOUR FLORA, and up your planter game
I know I’m going to raise an eyebrow or two with this one, but while nurseries were closed during May I really wanted a small tree - so I got one. It’s a great fake and when it’s blended in with the real plants it brings the height and lushness to the planted areas that I couldn’t have gotten on my own. It came in just a few days, and the planter elevated the look. Sorry mother nature — this is a cheat that I will use over and over!
Enjoy
Whatever you have, treat it with love. Layer it in with textures and colors, and dress it with plants and flowers. These small outdoor spaces really give back so much!
