Welcome to Field Day Friday, the monthly post guaranteed to get me out of the house...
I was looking for an interesting piece of wood to use as a mantle for a client and discovered M. Fine Lumber, which specializes in reclaimed lumber. I not only found a 6 foot mantle (for a ridiculously low price, lets just say well under $100) but I saw a few stacks of wood that really inspired me! These guys are not into hand-holding -- they will send you out on your own to explore their massive inventory until you find what you want, and then they're really nice about getting out that perfect piece of wood at the bottom of a 15' stack. These are actually large tree trunks (about 15" square, rings and all). A wall made up of these gorgeous cross-sections would be fantastic. I loved this stacking style, which would make a great room divider, screen for a work area, or a playhouse in a kid's room.
I recently ate at a Ippudo, a wonderful Ramen restaurant and thought this was another really great way to use reclaimed wood. Those gaps in the facade are actually windows.
