Design Like You Give a Damn

is the title of a book edited by Architecture for Humanity. It features designs for everything from a portable inflatable shelter for homeless, to a "play pump" -- a water pump powered by children pushing a playground roundabout.  One look at this book and you will be inspired to design something truly useful.
