The Indoor Outside Room

When the client said the one thing they wanted in this small powder room/laundry closet was a vessel sink, I got to work trying to find a suitable base. My vision for the room was inspired by images of potting sheds and barns, but when nothing suitable could be found, I started to think outside the box for alternative solutions. The answer came in a wonderful Design Within Reach metal stool, which was a perfect match for the concept. In keeping with the theme, the finishes included exterior tile set in a random pattern, an authentic barn-door light, and box-stall hardware for the maple panel door.  A discarded joist from a neighborhood brownstone found new life as the storage shelf over the door.

A local Gowanus metal fabricator modified this stool to accommodate the plumbing.

A joist salvaged from the renovation of a neighbor’s circa 1902 brownstone. If it can hold up a building for a hundred years, it can definitely handle some soaps and towels.
